One of Construction Industry's cleverest cover-ups
Envelopes By Architectural Profiles Limited
Retrofit refurbishment systems may not be new... but to be able to take a building which at best would be described as an eyesore and turn it into a visually exceptional building whilst meeting all today's performance criteria - quickly, inexpensively and highly efficiently, needs new and clever thinking.
The new 'APL Handi-Bracket' fixing system from APL is just that... indeed we believe it could be one of the cleverest, yet most effective, devices in the Architectural Engineers' gadget bag... and like most clever devices it is very simple but represents a major leap forward in envelope cladding technology.
The APL Handi-Bracket is a versatile, non-combustible, and extremely adjustable bracket/spacer system which accommodates and deals with all the 'nasties' associated with older building refurbishment. It will straighten wonky walls, span unwanted or ill-positioned apertures like old windows and doors giving perfect external alignment. It can facilitate parapets and becomes the strongest sub-framing for a new external wall cladding. APL Handi-Bracket is a part of the patented Tritherm spacer system and is around 1/3rd the cost of traditional 'Helping Hand' type systems.
The project featured is United Utilities' new Technical Training Centre in Bolton, a converted engine house on one of the water company's wastewater treatment sites. the envelope is an APL 'Slimwall' Rainscreen using Alucobond ACM - and the installer is Delta Cladding & Glazing Ltd. of Wirral.
Because of the non-combustible properties of the completed Handi-Bracket system it is being specified for many school and public building refurbishment and new-build projects.
